How to estimate mulch
Mulch is a protective layer placed over soil in garden beds and landscaped areas. It can improve the appearance of a space while helping soil hold moisture, moderate temperature swings, reduce erosion, and limit weed growth. The right amount depends on the material, the plants, and whether the area is primarily decorative or growing space.
Example
For a 20 ft by 12 ft bed, a 3 in layer requires 60 cubic feet of mulch, or about 2.22 cubic yards. Enter the bag coverage shown on your chosen product to see how many bags to buy.
Planning tip
A layer about 2 to 4 inches deep works well for many beds. Too little may not suppress weeds effectively; too much can slow water and air movement into the soil. Choose a mulch suited to your garden, and order a little extra for settling, curves, and uneven areas.
